•  In 2003, the Board of MTN Nigeria Communications Limited approved the establishment of a Foundation to manage the organisation's Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives across Nigeria. As a pan-African communications company with a large market in Nigeria, MTN felt it had an obligation to contribute to sustainable development initiatives that would improve the livelihood of communities all over Nigeria. It was against this background that the Board decided to invest up to 1% of its profit after tax annually in the Foundation, which was duly incorporated in July 2004 as a separate entity. MTN Foundation is a Company Limited by Guarantee, with its own set of Board of Directors.

•  The MTN Foundation is committed to improving the quality of life in communities all over Nigeria by partnering with private, public, and civil society organisations to execute sustainable projects in Education, Health and Economic Empowerment.

1.  Health:
•  MTN Partners Against Aids in the Community (MTN-PAAC)

•  The campaign will be implemented in all geo-political zones and will involve:
•  Awareness
•  Voluntary Counselling & Testing
•  Prevention of Mother to Child transmission.
•  Future Project: Environmental Health – Model Waste management

2.  Education :
•  MTN SchoolsConnect : Provision of PCs & Internet connectivity to 24 secondary schools in Kaduna, Enugu, Lagos, Abuja, Kwara, and Rivers (plans to expand to other states).
•  MTN/UNICEF Child Friendly School Initiative: Rehabilitation of primary schools to improve quality of basic education (starting with 3 schools in Bauchi, Delta and Lagos).
•  MTN UniversitiesConnect: Refurbishment and provision of digital access and infrastructure to university libraries.
•  Future projects: Education projects in line with the NEPAD agenda.

3.   Economic Empowerment:
•  Rural Telephone Project: Micro Finance scheme where rural women are provide with loans to acquire equipment necessary for them to run call centers businesses.
•  Habitat Low cost rural housing project: Construction of 600 low cost housing units in 6 geo-political zones over a four year period for rural dwellers.
•  Future projects: Farmer Empowerment Projects.

•  MTN SchoolsConnect project seeks to support government's efforts towards addressing the infrastructural challenges being experienced in the Nigerian education sector in line with the NEEDS program.

•  MTN SchoolsConnect project is a partnership between MTN Foundation and School Net Nigeria, whereby the following components have been provided:

•  21 computers (thin-client workstations) and a server
•  A Networkable printer
•  Furniture for the laboratories
•  VSAT equipment and Internet connectivity bandwidth subscribed for 1-year
•  Teacher training at a select location in the state for 6 teachers
•  Technical training for lab attendants as well as selected local company from the state for technical support
•  Insurance cover for 1-year
Retainer fees of the local technical company for 1-year.

•  The teacher development aspects of this project is an elaborate 4 month programme which starts with a 5 day face to face training session. This then continues in a 2-week online discussion programme, which ensures teachers exercise what was learnt in the face-to-face session. This is then followed by collaborative project sessions in which they work on projects with teacher in other schools in Nigeria and other parts of the world.

•  The trained teachers are also provided with materials to support their school based training where they are expected to train other teachers in their schools.
