Our Mission - To make our customers lives a whole lot brighter

While we add value through our products and services, we are also committed to adding value by ensuring good corporate governance, which has earned us commendation from various arms of government. We are proud to note that our level of fiscal compliance (through various tax payments) has made a significant contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product.

As a global brand, MTN subsists on the core brand values of Leadership,Integrity, Relationships, Innovation and a Can do attitude. We pride ourselves on our ability to make the impossible possible, connecting people with friends, family and opportunities and enriching lives through our products and services.

Nigeria’s Number 1, since 2001

On February 9, 2001, we secured one of four available licenses to operate digital GSM (Global System for Mobile Telecommunications) telephony from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).  A licence fee of US$285 million was paid for an initial 15 year period, allowing MTN Nigeria to provide and operate a 900 and 1800 MHz second-generation digital mobile service within Nigeria.

MTN Nigeria made the first call on its network on May 16, 2001.

On March 19, 2007, we were also granted a 3G licence from the NCC and later made a payment of $150 million before commencing 3G services in the same year.

Since commencing business operations in August 2001, MTN Nigeria has consistently placed a high premium on network quality, customer service and value-added services which truly enrich customers’ lives.

As a pioneer and leader in the industry, MTN has also recorded several notable firsts, which have positioned our operations and activities as a point of reference for the telecoms industry and the business community in Nigeria and Africa.

· On February 10, 2003 we were the first mobile company to record one million active subscribers on its network.

· As one of the major players in Nigeria’s GSM revolution, MTN Nigeria was also the first to launch its service across major Nigerian cities, and currently has the most expansive network coverage, spread across 2,840 cities, towns and villages in all 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

· MTN is the first company to invest in building a fibre-optic network pan-Nigeria.

· In 2007, we became the first Nigerian company to pay for a 3.5G license. We were also the first to launch the service.

· MTN became the first company in the world to launch the pre-paid Blackberry service.

· Our awareness of the need to promote environmental and Corporate Social Responsibility has also led us to establish a foundation (the first Nigerian telecommunications company to do so).  Through the MTN Foundation, we go the extra mile to put smiles on the faces of Nigerians by investing in sustainable projects spanning the education, economic empowerment and health sectors, which have a high impact on the quality of life in communities across Nigeria.

· MTN has also extended its level of responsibility to the environment by being the first to introduce bio-degradable recharge cards, which do not cause any damage to the environment.  We have also demonstrated our support for reduction in the use of paper, by introducing MTN E-charge which is an electronic way of loading airtime directly to phones, instead of buying recharge cards.

· We are also the first company in Nigeria to introduce free midnight calls for its subscribers, as well as popular value-added services such as Caller Tunez, Call Me, Family and Friends and Share and Sell, which offer a new and exciting twist to the way we use our phones to empower and connect with business associates, colleagues, family, friends, and loved ones.

Powering Connections... via First - Class Technology

MTN’s commitment to first-class network quality is at the centre of its key value proposition to its esteemed customers.

For this reason, we recently embarked on an extensive Network Modernization and Upgrade exercise to completely overhaul the network and boost its overall capacity. The project which is part of the $1.3 billion budget earmarked for network investment in 2012 alone, involves upgrading and replacing key network components with newer versions for enhanced capacity and improved quality of service.

Since inception, we have invested over $7 billion dollars in fixed assets and facilities nationwide to ensure that we continue to break new grounds in network expansion while providing state-of-the-art network infrastructure.

Some memorable milestones in our journey towards first-class network quality include:

· Building the Largest Digital Transmission Backbone

On January 20, 2003, we commissioned the 1st phase of our digital microwave transmission backbone, Y’elloBahnâ on January 20, 2003.

Constructed at an initial cost of $120million, the first phase ofY’elloBahnâ spanned 3, 500 kilometres. The 2nd phase ofY’elloBahnâ which started in July 2003 extended the Y’elloBahnâ  project to cover a total of 4,500 kilometres.

The length of the entire digital microwave transmission backbone currently stands at 11, 400km. This interconnects with Cameroun in Borno and Cross rivers states and with Niger Republic in Sokoto State.

In terms of distance and capacity, this makes the Y’elloBahnâ  Africa’s most extensive digital transmission infrastructure and it has significantly contributed to enhancing call quality on MTN’s network.

·      Deployment of Fibre Optic Cables

We also embarked on the deployment of fibre optic cables across the country to boost the transmission capacity on our network.

This massive project has so far been executed in eight phases, and as at October 2012, a total of 10,137 kilometres had been covered with fibre-optic cables across Nigeria. This makes it the longest privately-owned fibre-optic cable ever laid in Africa and definitely one of the most modern.

MTN’s overriding mission is to be a catalyst for Nigeria’s economic growth and development, helping to unleash Nigeria’s strong developmental potential not only through the provision of world class communications but also through innovative and sustainable corporate social responsibility initiatives.
