At MTN, the challenge we have set for ourselves is to help ensure that we link up every city, village, hamlet, river and creek in Nigeria. We have a sacred trust with the Nigerian people to ensure that we cover 95% or more of the Nigerian population by the end of the licence year. Of course we can only do this if we invest significantly in all corners of Nigeria.

We are investing in excess of $1.4 billion in the Nigerian economy, a substantial level of investment that is second only to the oil industry in Nigeria. We are building base transceiver stations, switches, Friendship Centres and erecting a major transmission backbone between the major regions of Nigeria, to facilitate the transmission of calls from city to city.

We are also investing in people. We have well over 1,500 Nigerians in our full time employ now, and have also put in place an elaborate skill transfer programme that enables expatriates transfer useful skills and expertise to their Nigerian counterparts.
