MTN Foundation announces the start of 2020 Scholarship Schemes

MTN Foundation has commenced calls for application for its annual scholarship schemes – Science and Technology Scholarship Scheme (STSS) and Scholarship Scheme for Blind Students (SSBS). The call for application commenced June 15, 2020 and open to students in accredited public tertiary institutions (universities, colleges of technology and polytechnics) across Nigeria.

Application for STSS is open to all 3rd year Science & Technology students with a minimum CGPA of 3.5 (Second Class Upper/or its equivalent). The SSBS is for visually impaired students in their 2nd and 3rd year, with a minimum CGPA of 2.5 or its equivalent.

Speaking on the scholarship schemes, Acting Executive Secretary, MTN Foundation, Odunayo Sanya, said, “We understand the importance of education and technology in the development of our nation and this underscores our various interventions in the educational sector. Our youth are the future and fulfilling their dreams is key to this. We look forward to engaging with the newest recipients of the scholarship schemes once the process is completed. I encourage every eligible student to please apply.”

The sum of N200,000.00 will be awarded annually to cover each awardee’s tuition, book allowance and stipend, till graduation as long as they maintain the required grades.

The scheme has awarded scholarships to 3,829 students in the last 10 years.

Calls for the MTN Foundation- MUSON Scholarship Programme 2020 begin.

MTN Foundation has commenced calls for application for the Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON) scholarship programme 2020. The call for application, which began on Friday, August 7, 2020, is open to musically inclined young Nigerians across the country.

Since 2006, the MTN Foundation partnering with MUSON has funded and developed over 330 music scholars providing a scholarship award covering tuition, transportation, resource materials, among others for a two-year diploma.

MUSON’s internationally recognized programme promotes the understanding and performance of classical and contemporary music. All applicants must possess a minimum academic qualification of GCE with at least 5 credit passes including English or its SSCE equivalent. In addition, applicants must have a grade 5 or higher pass certificate of MUSON or any other recognized music examining body.

Speaking on the scholarship, Acting Executive Secretary of MTN Foundation, Odunayo Sanya, said, “Music is a universal form of expression. Music education is however not readily available or affordable to millions of young Nigerians. It has been inspiring seeing our young scholars excel in various areas of music across the globe. 360 young Nigerians receive scholarships from MTN Foundation

MTN Foundation has awarded scholarships to 360 university students at a virtual ceremony on November 12, 2020. The scholarships were awarded under the MTNF scholarship schemes made up of the MTNF Science & Technology Scholarship (STSS) and Scholarship for the Blind Students (SBSS). In attendance were the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, represented by the Technical Assistant, Dr. Olufemi Adeluyi; Honourable Minister of Science & Technology represented by the Acting Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Dr. Francis Chizea; former Minister of Communication Technology, Dr. Omobola Johnson amongst other notable dignitaries.

Speaking at the ceremony, the representative of the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Olufemi Adeluyi said: “We are here with the MTN Foundation to celebrate scholars that have excelled in school. MTN is also supporting people with disabilities by funding their education and this is very commendable. The Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy is constantly working towards elevating skills over degrees. We are also committed to ensuring that individuals are empowered with the right tools and skills.”

Also speaking, Honourable Minister of Science & Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu represented by Dr. Francis Chizea said: “I am glad that MTN, in giving back to the society through its foundation, set up a scholarship scheme to empower the youths and as well, drive science and technology. This is a welcome development and a commendable effort that other organizations need to emulate.”

A major highlight of the ceremony was a fireside chat themed “Insight. Influence. Impact” with thought leaders sharing inspiring insights with the scholars. Nigeria’s former Minister for Communication Technology, Dr. Omobola Johnson reiterated the role MTN continues to play in the ICT space and its impact on the country. “We need to get a workforce that is very comfortable

with technology. We are in a state where we need world-class educational institutions and interventions such as this that will enable students to be very vast in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics,” Johnson said.

Leading to the ceremony, this year’s graduating students from the scholarship programme were hosted to a career incubation boot camp facilitated by experts from Google, Oracle, Cisco and Jobberman. Facilitators shared insights on various opportunities amongst other vital employability tips.

Speaking on the scholarship award ceremony and workshop for graduands, Executive Secretary, MTN Foundation, Nonny Ugboma said, “Providing access to quality education is the first step to a world of opportunity for the youth of our nation. We know it does not stop there. We need to also ensure that they are adequately prepared for the workplace. We hope that the fireside chat at the award ceremony will inspire the students to reach for greatness and innovation. Furthermore, it is our belief that the employability workshop held earlier will enrich the career path of the graduating students. The MTNF scholarship scheme is more than just funds; it is a commitment to build the capacity of our youth. We wish all our graduating scholars success as they set out to take on the world and congratulate all awardees as the next set of young nation builders in the making.”

The newly awarded scholars will each enjoy a scholarship grant worth N200,000 annually till graduation as long as they maintain a CGPA of 3.5 or its equivalent. The scholarship covers tuition, book allowance and stipend. Till date, MTN Foundation has awarded scholarships to 3,829 students valued at over NGN 2.1Billion.

The MTNF annual scholarships are awarded to high performing students in Nigerian public tertiary institutions.

Digital education gets another boost!

As call-for-entries for 2020 MTN ICT and Business Skills Training begins

The MTN Foundation has commenced a call-for-entries for the fourth phase of its ICT and Business Skills Training programme. The programme organised in partnership with some of its ecosystem partners – Google, Oracle and Cisco – will expose 1,500 Nigerian youth to the latest development in entrepreneurship and digital marketing .

This year’s edition of the programme covering different areas of digital skills will be delivered virtually by experts from Google, Oracle and Cisco. Applications are welcome from individuals who reside and operate small businesses in Abia, Akwa Ibom and Kaduna States. The call for applications opens on the 1st of October, 2020 and closes on the 25th of October, 2020.

Commenting on the initiative, Nonny Ugboma, Executive Secretary, MTN Foundation said: “Success in all aspects of life has become increasingly dependent on our ability to pivot digital solutions. As an ICT company invested in Nigeria’s future, we are constantly seeking ways to bridge the gap between our youth and the skills they require to thrive in a digital world. This is the raison d’etre of this initiative – the need to empower young Nigerians to excel in a digitally-driven economy.”

Over 1,900 young entrepreneurs have been trained across five states (Oyo, Kano, Imo, Nasarawa and Rivers) since the initiative started in 2018. The MTN Foundation plans to roll-out this progamme in phases across Nigeria.

Since its inception in 2005, the MTN Foundation has invested over 21 billion Naira in various projects across the 36 states and FCT.

Partnerships that work! MTN and Samsung support the fight against COVID-19

… Donates communication gadgets and SIM cards to Isolation Centres

As part of ongoing drive to support the Federal Government’s continued effort against the spread of the corona virus, Samsung and MTN Nigeria have provided communication support to health workers across the country.

Five hundred A2 Core phones from Samsung together with SIM cards and 2GB data monthly for six months from MTN will be given to case managers in the isolation centres across the 36 states of the country as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This donation eases the process of data capturing and case reporting in these centres, supporting the government’s strategic plan in dealing with the pandemic.

Commenting, Chief Corporate Services Officer, MTN Nigeria, Tobechukwu Okigbo, said that to win the fight against the corona virus, Nigerians – corporates and individuals must continue to work with the government. “Everyone that calls Nigeria home must see this pandemic as an opportunity to unite in service to the country, for the greater good of us all. We are only good together. MTN will continue to look for ways to collaborate with other stakeholders to help the government flatten the curve.”

Samsung’s Managing Director, Caden Yu describes the initiative as the company’s commitment to supporting the government in these times. ‘’Our thoughts are with every Nigerian and this donation is a way of using our resources to fight this pandemic. The survival of the human race is hinged on our collaborative effort; together we will get through this.”

It will be recalled that three months ago, MTN, as part of its Y’ello Hope package, donated over N500 million worth of airtime, data, and analytics, through the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) in support to state governments to facilitate communications during travel restrictions and, over N1.4 billion worth of airtime, data, and devices to connect medical personnel and health agencies.

Banky W, Omawumi & Malik Yusef As the music reality show hits screens this weekend

Six-time Grammy-award winner, Malik Yusef and award-winning Nigerian artistes, Banky W and Omawumi have been announced as judges of the premiere edition of the MTN Y’ello Star Project. The trio will help unleash the musical talent from the selected finalists.

Speaking on the selection of the judges for the Y’ello Star music reality TV show, General Manager, Brands and Communications, MTN Nigeria, Richard Iweanoge said “Who is in the best position to recognize the diverse music talent than internationally acclaimed music stars? We are blessed as a country to have a youth population with the talent to take on the world and they need the right kind of mentorship to excel. This is what informed our choice of judges for this maiden edition of the Y’ello Star music project.”

Bankole Wellington, popularly known as Banky W, looks forward to grooming the next big music stars from our country. In his words, “I am ready to share my knowledge with each participant because I believe they all have the potential to become sensational stars expanding Nigeria’s presence on the global map.”

Also sharing her hopes about the show, popular singer and songwriter, Omawumi Megbele, simply known as Omawumi said, “I am a product of a music reality show and I would like to see all the finalists become successful in the Nigerian music industry and beyond. I am determined to tutor the participants to become the next music stars.”

Internationally renowned songwriter and rapper, Malik Yusef, expressed his thoughts as a judge on the show saying, “This is a huge opportunity for me to positively impact the life and career trajectory of the next music stars coming out of Nigeria. The contestants will be intensely drilled through the entire scope of music creation, which is critical for a break on to the global stage.”

As the stars roll out to support this year’s top Nigerian music project

Tobi Bakre and Hilda Baci will host the maiden edition of MTN Y’ello Star, as announced by the company today. The launch of the reality music project, MTN Y’ello Star, is poised to build capacity among Nigeria’s musical youth talent and position them for success on the international scene.

As YDFS expands MoMo service offerings

Following the launch of its Super-Agent network service, ‘MoMo Agent,’ Y’ello Digital Financial Services (YDFS) has announced the expansion of its MoMo products and services, in a bid to deepen financial inclusion in Nigeria.

As part of the expansion, ‘MoMo Agent’ has been upgraded with bill payment, cash deposit and withdrawal, as well as data and airtime purchase components. Upgrades also include bulk disbursement services enabling public and private companies to make payments en masse anywhere in Nigeria without a bank account, ATM availability or bank branch.

According to a 2018 Access to Financial Services Survey by Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access (EFInA), 36.6 million adults, representing 36.8% of Nigeria’s adult population, are financially excluded. The Federal Government, through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), announced plans to ensure that 80% of Nigerian adults are financially included by 2020. YDFS is one of the leading Nigerian entities working to accelerate the CBN’s financial inclusion drive.

Commenting on the expansion, the Chief Executive Officer of YDFS, Usoro Usoro said, “I am excited to announce the expansion to our MoMo Agent service. Our goal is to reach every underbanked and unbanked person in Nigeria, and we are focused on achieving that. Anyone, anywhere in Nigeria can handle financial transactions within their neighbourhood. This is our goal to reach Nigerians everywhere, enriching lives and supporting the Federal Government’s financial inclusion drive.”

With an agent base of more than 150, 000 and growing, the ‘MoMo Agent’ service is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria to recruit agents to provide financial services within communities on behalf of banks.

YDFS, a subsidiary of MTN Nigeria, launched ‘MoMo Agent’ services to provide safe and accessible money transfer services to financially underserved communities across Nigeria. These expansions come as YDFS leverages its vast distribution network to disburse funds to beneficiaries at the last-mile, including towns and villages in all local government areas across the country.

Berklee Announces partnership with Afrinolly Creative Hub on MTN Y’ello Star Project

Berklee College of Music will take part in Y’ello Star, the latest music reality project by MTN Nigeria, with Afrinolly as Technical Partner. Members of the Berklee community will serve in various capacities on the project, and the winner of the music reality project will record their debut single at the Power Station at BerkleeNYC.

“We’re excited to work with MTN and Afrinolly Creative Hub on the Y’ello Star Project,” says Berklee President Roger H. Brown. “This is a great opportunity for artists from the vibrant Nigerian music scene to get advice and mentorship from Berklee’s knowledgeable professors while broadening awareness of Berklee in the region through MTN’s large audience. We look forward to hearing all of the talents and welcoming the winner to the Power Station at BerkleeNYC.”

MTN Nigeria created Y’ello Star to search, discover, nurture and launch music talents in the young Nigerian community. Over 10,000 contestants submitted entries for the project, and just the top 16 contestants will make it to the hub for the competition.

Commenting on the project, the Acting Chief Marketing Officer, MTN Nigeria, Anthony Obi emphasized the unique difference between MTN Y’ello Star and other music reality TV shows. “This project goes beyond discovering talent in the Nigerian entertainment industry. MTN Y’ello Star is a conduit for capacity building within the creative industry, empowering the contestants and industry with the relevant practical knowledge to compete on a global scale.
