Mother and Child Health

“Children are one-third of our population and all of our future.”

– Select Panel for the Promotion of Child Health, 1981

Now, imagine a world without them.

According to the Nigeria Demographic Health Survey (NDHS, 2018), the under-five mortality rate in Nigeria is 132 per 1,000 live births meaning that 1 in 8 Nigerian children never reach the age of 5. Infant deaths, which account for half of child mortality have declined from 87 per 1000 live births in 1990 to 67 in 2018.

One (1) Nigerian woman dies in childbirth every 10 minutes, and 1 Nigerian child under-5 years of age dies every minute. The main causes of these latter deaths are common ailments such as malaria, typhoid, diarrhea which are preventable and treatable.

Sadly, despite multiple interventions by the public and private sectors, we are the second-largest contributor to the under-five and maternal mortality rate in the world accounting for 14% of the world’s maternal mortality deaths (the highest in West and Central Africa).

MTN Foundation seeks to change to this.

Our goal: Is to contribute to the reduction of Nigeria’s high maternal and infant mortality rate by creating awareness about the scourge and by implementing various projects and interventions towards improving the health of mothers and children in Nigeria.

Objectives of the Mother and Child Health Cause:

  • Contribute to keeping Mothers and Children under 5 alive.
  • Contribute to improving the health and wellbeing of Nigerians.

This Cause is in line with the UN Goal (GOAL 3: Good Health and Well-being) and carried out in partnership with the Federal and State ministries of health.

Some of our interventions over the years include:

  • The establishment of sickle cell clinics in Lagos, Kano, Delta and Edo states for the provision of preventive and curative healthcare services of sickle cell disorder.
  • The establishment of twelve Haemodialysis centres for kidney disease treatment (dialysis) and six Mammography Centres for cancer screening across the country.
  • Improved access to primary health care through mobile medical clinics in Taraba, Abia, Ogun, Delta, Katsina and Niger states.
  • The provision of equipment and delivery packs to 24 Maternal Wards and also creating awareness of maternal and child health issues in Abia, Kaduna, Cross River, Niger, Sokoto and Oyo states.
  • Carried out medical outreaches in markets in Rivers and Lagos States.
  • The provision of medical emergency equipment to 12 hospitals in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo states.
  • Launched the Anti-Substance Abuse Programme(ASAP) aimed at creating awareness on the dangers of substance abuse particularly among young people in Lagos, Bauchi, Kano, Rivers, FCT and Imo states.

Our desire is that every mother gives birth in a safe, conducive health facility, and our children enjoy quality care and live full lives.

They birth our future.
